The Ultimate Scholarship Documents Checklist: Income & Caste Validity

Published: 2024-04-02

When applying for government scholarships, the most common reason for rejection is faulty documentation. Reviewers do not have the time to ask for corrections; they simply hit reject. Here is exactly what you need to prepare.

1. The Income Certificate

Income certificates have strict expiration dates. In most states, they are valid for only six months to one year from the date of issue. Never upload a three-year-old income certificate. It must be issued by a competent revenue officer (Tehsildar or above). Notary affidavits are completely invalid.

2. The Caste / Community Certificate

Unlike income certificates, caste certificates (for SC, ST, OBC) are generally valid for a lifetime if issued digitally. However, for OBC students, the Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) certificate must often be renewed annually. Ensure your caste is listed in the official central or state gazette.

3. Domicile / Resident Certificate

State-sponsored scholarships (like MahaDBT or UP Scholarship) require a valid domicile certificate to prove you are a resident of that state. Similar to the caste certificate, ensure it is issued by the appropriate district magistrate or revenue office.

4. Bank Passbook & Aadhaar

Your name on your Aadhaar card must perfectly match the name on your bank passbook and your school marksheets. The bank account must be active, in your own name (not your parents, unless it's a joint account explicitly allowed for minors), and seeded for DBT.
